Self-Tape Assessment

KNOW WHAT'S WORKING BEFORE YOU PRESS SUBMIT.

Professional assessment for actors preparing drama school audition self-tapes.

For many drama schools, your self-tape is the first time an audition panel will see your work.

The Actor's Nest Self-Tape Assessment gives you an informed outside perspective before you submit — helping you understand what's working, what may be holding the performance back and what needs your attention next.

Your performance is assessed by an experienced Actor's Nest tutor, with detailed, practical feedback on your acting, interpretation, choices and presentation.

This isn't about trying to manufacture the “perfect” self-tape.

It's about making sure the work you're submitting genuinely represents what you can do.

BEFORE YOU PRESS SUBMIT

When you've been working on the same material for weeks, it can become difficult to see it objectively.

You know the text. You've rehearsed the choices. You've probably recorded it more times than you intended.

But is the performance communicating what you think it is?

Is the connection there?

Are your choices clear without becoming fixed?

Does the work feel truthful on camera?

And, most importantly, does the tape show the actor you want the panel to see?

A Self-Tape Assessment gives you an informed outside perspective at the point when it matters — before the decision to submit becomes final.

We won't simply tell you whether we “like” your performance.

We'll help you understand what's working, what isn't yet communicating clearly and where further development could make the greatest difference.

WHO THE ASSESSMENT IS FOR

You've developed the work. Now you want an informed outside perspective.

The Self-Tape Assessment is designed for:

  • Year 13 students preparing drama school self-tape submissions
  • gap-year actors approaching the audition process
  • actors reapplying to drama school
  • actors who have developed material independently and want professional feedback
  • participants from Actor's Nest programmes who want to assess their work before submission
  • applicants who have recorded their tape but aren't yet confident that it's ready to send

Still developing the material?

If the work itself needs substantial development rather than assessment, an Audition Intensive or Private Coaching session may be a better next step.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT

We assess the performance — not simply the recording.

CLARITY
Are your intentions, circumstances and choices clear?

CONNECTION
Are you genuinely connected to the text, circumstances and imagined other person — or can we see the performance being presented?

TRUTH
Does the work feel specific, responsive and alive on camera?

UNDERSTANDING
Do your choices reveal a confident understanding of the text and the character?

We also consider:

  • interpretation and textual detail
  • objectives and actions
  • vocal and physical communication
  • connection to camera
  • stillness and screen presence
  • contrast and range across multiple pieces
  • suitability for the audition requirements
  • the overall impact of the submission

Where presentation or technical choices are affecting the work, we'll tell you that too — but our primary focus is the acting.

HOW IT WORKS

1. Submit Your Tape

Send us your recorded audition material along with the relevant drama school requirements and any context we need to understand the submission.

2. We Assess the Work

An Actor's Nest tutor reviews your performance carefully, considering the acting, interpretation, choices, communication and overall effectiveness of the tape.

3. Receive Your Feedback

You'll receive detailed written and/or recorded feedback identifying what's working, what needs attention and practical priorities for further development.

4. Decide What Comes Next

You may be ready to make some final adjustments and submit.

Or the assessment may identify something worth exploring further.

If you want us to assess the revised version of the same piece, you can book a Refinement Assessment at a reduced rate.

Assessment Options

Single Monologue Assessment

£75

Detailed professional assessment of one drama school audition monologue, with clear feedback on the performance and priorities for further development.

Full Audition Assessment

£125

Assessment of two audition pieces, including detailed feedback on each performance alongside consideration of contrast, range and the overall balance of your audition material.

Ideal for actors preparing a classical and contemporary submission.

Refinement Assessment

£45

Available after an initial Self-Tape Assessment.

Submit a revised version of the same monologue after working on your feedback and receive a further assessment of how the work has developed.

A final outside perspective before you press submit.

WHAT YOU'LL LEAVE WITH

Following your assessment, you'll have:

✓ a clear understanding of what's already working

✓ specific feedback on your acting and performance choices

✓ an informed outside perspective on how the work communicates on camera

✓ clear priorities for anything that needs further development

✓ greater confidence in deciding whether the tape is ready to submit

The aim isn't to make you dependent on someone else's approval.

It's to give you the information you need to make stronger decisions about your own work.

WHERE THE SELF-TAPE ASSESSMENT FITS

REFINE — AUDITION SELF-TAPE ASSESSMENT

Every actor's preparation journey is different.

You don't need to complete another Actor's Nest programme before submitting a Self-Tape Assessment.

Some actors come to us after developing their work through Drama School: Unlocked, an Audition Intensive or Private Coaching.

Others have prepared independently and simply want an experienced outside perspective before submission.

If your assessment identifies work that needs further development, you can continue independently or access targeted Private Coaching.

And as live auditions and recalls approach, a Mock Audition Panel provides the opportunity to test your work under realistic audition conditions.

DEVELOP → REFINE → PREPARE FOR THE ROOM.

RESULTS THAT MATTER

THREE YEARS. 100% SUCCESS.

Every student we've supported through the drama school application process over the past three admissions cycles has secured a drama school place.

Our students have received offers from many of the UK's leading drama schools.
